According to InMind, a research company, and the Internet Association of Ukraine (IAU), a total of 19.7 million people over 15 years old access the Internet. This figure dates back to September 2012. It is approximately half of all young and adult citizens in Ukraine.<br />
<br />
Among all of these users, 17.9 million use the Internet at least once a week, and 13.3 million daily.
The <a href="http://www.inau.org.ua/173.4520.0.0.1.0.phtml">data</a> of the IAU shows that in the last two years the number of Internet users has increased by half, from 33% of population in the third quarter of 2010 to 50% in the third quarter of 2012. The largest age group of Internet users are 15 to 29 years old and make up 43%, and are followed by 30- to 45-year-olds (35%) and 45-year-olds and older (23%). The gender balance for Internet users in Ukraine is almost equal – men (51%) and women (49%).<br />
<br />
One of the biggest trends for 2012 is increased internet usage among rural users. During the first 9[nine] months of 2012, their relative number increased by 53%. This in some part might owe itself to the very inexpensive cost of Internet access in Ukraine, one of the cheapest in the world. The average monthly fee for home Internet is slightly less than US$10.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
It is snowing for the first time this winter in Braintree. Paul Gunn is driving his car to the train station, and we talk about his grandchildren and how much he and his wife love them. Suddenly, he pauses and exclaims, “My wife says can you shut up when I start speaking!” </div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
I glance at my watch. We have met to talk three and a half hours ago. Our interview was not sad, as I had expected before the meeting. Paul Gunn, a 59-year-old Braintree resident and supporter of the Death with Dignity Initiative, keeps himself optimistic even while telling the story of his father, a terminally ill patient who died several years ago. But his father was not the only person who faced a serious illness in his family. </div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
“My wife has almost died twice now,” says Gunn. He met his second wife, Carol Cornetta, through the Internet at the end of the ‘90s. In 2000 they married, but soon the family faced health issues.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
“For the first time, she had leukemia, when, in fact, her red blood cells were basically exploding inside the body,” says Gunn. Cornetta did not give up and fought until fully recovering. It took her months of treatment in the hospital. “She has got a lot of pain,” says Gunn.</div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
The second challenge for Gunn and his wife came when Cornetta had a heart attack. Her husband’s support was essential in this fight. “He is my second husband, actually. I am so glad I found him, as he can do anything for me,” says Cornetta. </div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
These health problems were nothing new for Gunn’s family. Gunn’s father was 72 when doctors said he was losing his kidney function and sent him to the hospital. The only solution that could save his father’s life was dialysis, a procedure that substitutes for kidney function by filtering the blood. </div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3" style="text-align: left;">
Gunn took care of his father almost every day despite their tense relationship. Cornetta recalls, “He had a hard time with his father getting along with him. For some reason he was not the favorite son, and it took a long time not to blame himself.”</div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3" style="text-align: left;">
After a year and a half in the hospital, Paul Gunn’s father was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Doctors said that the cancer was spreading to the rest of his body. “They gave him six to eight months of life left,” says Gunn. Doctors were frank with the family and explained that during the last three months it would be what Gunn describes as “sheer pain.” Gunn remembers his father’s reply. “He asked doctors right straight out, ‘What happens if I go off dialysis? How long will I live?’ ‘Three days, maybe.’ ‘All right, no more dialysis.’”</div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3" style="text-align: left;">
Paul Gunn’s father decided to refuse any treatment, knowing it will kill him. Doctors were heavily against his decision, but before arrival at the hospital his father had submitted an official document that allowed him to refuse treatment. Gunn says, “You are allowed to say, I do not want this medical treatment. Doctors could not do anything to stop it.” After four days in a coma, his father died. </div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3" style="text-align: left;">
Gunn knows that nothing would have helped his father. He justifies his father’s choice. “<span class="s1">He had an option and used it. </span>I would like to be able to have the same option when or if it comes down to it.” </div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p3" style="text-align: left;">
For many families, the decision to let their loved ones die by their choice can be unacceptable for ethical or religious reasons. Cornetta argues that people have these objections only when they do not see the suffering. “When it happens close to you, I think, you understand more,” says Cornetta.</div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVnHvVuB4ti_7Kku6Ds3-Cpj8PLGglU-42UYghlwZn3DNk6vKrTwIxKbEou8-GPX5YKGrNuA_gC0VqVnPTySscPIZPOy6i0KvmItAs_6pbqBhyphenhyphenlSImvs49HUFMfEX60_Dn-q92mV5bYEKh/s1600/$fundraised.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVnHvVuB4ti_7Kku6Ds3-Cpj8PLGglU-42UYghlwZn3DNk6vKrTwIxKbEou8-GPX5YKGrNuA_gC0VqVnPTySscPIZPOy6i0KvmItAs_6pbqBhyphenhyphenlSImvs49HUFMfEX60_Dn-q92mV5bYEKh/s1600/$fundraised.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
Paul Gunn clearly remembers the moment that pushed him to speak up on death with dignity on the eve of the election. By chance, he heard a death with dignity opponents’ ad on the radio, and it outraged him. “It was a huge lie!” exclaims Gunn. </div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
Carol Cornetta identifies her husband as a longtime supporter of death with dignity. “I think he agreed with death with dignity even before his father passed away,” says Cornetta. But Paul Gunn never became an activist campaigning for the initiative. On November 6, fifty-one percent of voters in Massachusetts voted against Question #2. </div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
Carol Cornetta worked for a long time as a nurse, but unlike many professionals in the field, she shares her husband views on death with dignity. “If there is no hope for surviving and quality of life while in a hospital, and there is no communication, why is it worth living?” asks Cornetta. </div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
Cornetta understands the reasons why so many people voted against the initiative. “My own part is that people always hold on to their hopes. There still will be a miracle and a person gets better. They always want to have a chance,” claims Cornetta.</div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
Gunn’s family does not lose hope that the Death with Dignity Initiative will succeed one day. The main question is, when? “Honestly, I would like to see it in the next ballot,” says Gunn.</div>

Twitter is supposed to be the fastest tool to deliver first-hand evidences from witnesses. <br />
<br />
We created <a href="http://electua.org/">a platform</a> which accumulate messages. Moreover, we used a set of hashtags to mark messages (tweets). National level reports - with <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23elect_ua">#elect_ua</a>, reports of election fraud - with <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23elect_sos">#elect_sos</a>, regional reports (we had 5 key regions, 10 more joined us later) - by the name of the region - <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23elect_od">#elect_od</a> for Odessa, <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23elect_te">#elect_te</a> for Ternopil etc<br />
<br />
How did it work? Pls, see presentation:<br />

As they come from different areas – professional journalists, sociologists, IT-specialists, bloggers, designers, civic activists. One of the most visible outcome of people who met under MediaNext events was a series of journalists’ flashmobs called <a href="http://24godyny.livejournal.com/">Magazine for 24 hours</a>. A team of had to create and publish a magazine (from 28 to 90 pages) in Internet at the end of 24 hour timeline. <br />
<br />
Here you are <a href="http://issuu.com/24godyny/docs/bomjour/"><b>Result 1</b></a> and <a href="http://issuu.com/24godyny/docs/24godyny-bez-pyati"><b>Result 2</b></a><br />
<br />
Since then, the movement has spread all over Ukraine - during 2009/2010 ten more magazines were created.<br />

And the whole phenomenon is so, well... <span style="font-style: italic;">new</span>, that we're finding that these discussions often lead to innovative ways of thinking about new media journalism.<br /><br />In November, Internews Ukraine invited David Brewer to speak at a MediaNext event. Brewer's talk was fascinating. But equally as fascinating was the dynamic group of professionals who found themselves sitting in a room together, considering how best to format their websites, what they would write on their blogs about this, and what they could "tweet" that would have the greatest impact.<br /><br />After the event, Brewer coined the term "Middle Media," which I suspect will become familiar journalism vernacular before too long. He was referring to the group of people he met that day in Kyiv: a community of bloggers and journalists who have set out to fill the gap between traditional media and social networking.<br /><br />Middle Media is about providing quality, verified information about things that are overlooked by the big news agencies and getting it out there to the public on Facebook, on Twitter, on blogs-- anywhere the public congregates, so does Middle Media.<br /><br />The diverse voices that make up Middle Media are knowledgeable and enthusiastic and ready to change the world. They're the kind of voices you <span style="font-style: italic;">want</span> reporting on the news.<br /><br />Ukraine's Middle Media is expanding and improving thanks to MediaNext and forward-thinkers like David Brewer. The Ukrainian people are craving news they can rely on-- news that <span style="font-style: italic;">they</span> have decided is important- whenever and wherever they want it. Middle Media is satisfying that need.<br /><br />Traditional media forms might not be dead yet, but they will indisputably need to modify the way they do their job if they are to survive in an era where Middle Media is always ready to jump in and take on the tough issues traditional media has ignored and which are important to the public.<br /><br />Middle Media.<br />Remember that term because you'll be hearing it more and more.<br /><br />If you'd like to read more about what David Brewer has to say about Middle Media, check out his article on it. http://www.mediahelpingmedia.org/content/view/533/1/Allison McCabehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03899986116982622648noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7836075112850096894.post-11702605220846763032009-12-04T04:46:00.000-08:002010-09-24T03:23:03.443-07:00What is MediaNext?Can new media change the fundamental structure of our society?<br />
<br />
The MediaNext team thinks it can.<br />
The possibilities of new media are absolutely endless! Twitter, Facebook, You Tube and blogs aren't just for teenagers planning parties anymore! MediaNext is at the forefront of a fundamental transformation in journalism.<br />
<br />
So what <span style="font-style: italic;">is</span> MediaNext? At Internews Ukraine we call it a project with soul. We're creating a whole community of journalists who are paving the way for Ukraine into the future of media.<br />
<br />
We're bringing together professional journalists and editors, civil journalists and media activists, bloggers, NGO leaders, and journalism students from across Ukraine - all with new-media in mind!<br />
<br />
Ukrainian journalists who participate in the MediaNext program receive training on the latest social media techniques, hear inspiring guest speakers (we've already heard from David Brewer and Piet Bakker), and learn from each others experiences.<br />
<br />
And it's working! Participants have gone on to create online versions of their newspapers and created flash mob events using new media. Essentially, these innovative journalists are ushering the entire Ukrainian media sphere into a new era!<br />
<br />
The initiative is proving that we can indeed shape the structure of society through the use of new media. And along the way, we're showing how everyday Ukrainian <span style="font-style: italic;">people</span> can decide what should be considered important to the media.<br />
<br />
Excited yet? We are.<br />
Stick around because there will be updates and news of MediaNext programsAllison McCabehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03899986116982622648noreply@blogger.com0
